Types of Stitches Used in Chikankari

Tepchi : A linear long stitch outlining the chikankari motifs.

BAKHIYA : This is shadow work and also the main stitch in chikankari. This stitch is done on the reverse side of the fabric and the design is visible on the front side of the cloth as a double outline.

RAHET : This stitch is inspired by the Bakhiya stitch and is also known as dohri bakhiya and is used to create outline stitches.

HOOL : It is mainly done in the centre of the floral motifs with buttonhole stitch. This eyelet stitch creates a circular effect.

ZANZEERA : This stitch is done on the right / top side of the fabric forming a chain enhancing the outline of a design or pattern or shape shape like flower, petal etc.

JALI : As the name suggests, this stitch creates a net like design, this is called jali. This is precision needle work which make tiny precision holes visible.

PHANDA : Phanda is the commonest chikankari millet shaped stitch created by french knots to give filling effects in different motifs.

MURRI : Is rice shaped stitch generally used in making the centre of the flower in simple Chikankari design motifs.

Lucknowi Chikankari is always done on light weight fabric. If the fabric is dense and thick it is difficult for the needle to pierce and then move around to create a design.

It is always advisable to either hand wash the garment in a soft detergent or get it dry cleaned. Machine wash is a big no.

If the garment is embellished with add-ons like Mukaish, Kamdani, Badla, Sequin, Bead, and Mirror work etc. then only dry clean.
